The lwa and the orishas, who are respectively the spirits of Vodou and
Santeria, currently rank among the most active and vital spirits on Earth.
Gregarious, responsive spirits, their fan-base grows exponentially and
internationally every day, transcending their original religious boundaries.
But who are these spirits that so many people love? And how do we work with them? How can we recognize their presence and power in our own lives? What is their relationship to saints?
Join author Judika Illes for a very special workshop at Mystic Spirit in Montclair, New Jersey. Spirits to be discussed include Papa Legba, Ogun, Yemaya, Oshun, and Simbi, as well as Shango, Oya, the beautiful mermaid La Sirène and her sister spirits of the Ezili (Erzulie) clan. We will learn about the Seven African Powers and analyze the distinctions between traditional African Vodou, Haitian Vodou, and its evolution into New Orleans Voodoo. Topics include Marie Laveau, who has now taken her place among the lwa, as well as her friend and teacher, Dr. John Montanet, who is assuming his place in that pantheon right now. Spells, rituals, methods, and techniques will be examined, so bring your questions, concerns, and a notebook.
Judika Illes is the author of four popular encyclopedias: The Encyclopedia of Spirits; The Encyclopedia of Mystics, Saints, and Sages;. The Encyclopedia of 5000 Spells; and The Element Encyclopedia of Witchcraft.
